Did you ever make New Year’s resolutions only to break them in a few days? I personally do not want to set resolutions. Instead I set intentions and visualize how they look in my life. This is why I decided to do a Green Smoothie Challenge. In place of trying to change a bunch of habits all at once, I think it is good to begin with one. If we each add a green smoothie chockful of healthy raw greens and fruits as some part of our day’s nutrition, we will be adding valuable nutrients that fill us up and power us through our day. As we feel how good this feels, we will make better choices all day long to keep the good energy going. I like to begin my day with a smoothie, but if you want you can have it with your lunch, as an afternoon snack, as a kind of cocktail while you are making your dinner, or as an after meal dessert.
So what is a green smoothie and why bother drinking one? The simple formula for a green smoothie is 0-2 pieces of fruit, 1 cup of greens, 1-2 T. seeds, stevia or honey IF you need it sweeter (a banana or a date does this as well), and whatever superfoods you want to add. Superfoods include adaptogen powders, spirulina, chlorella, raw cacao, mushroom powders, wild berries, bee pollen, protein powders, etc. I try to give my smoothies protein by using seeds instead of manufactured powders, but if you need more protein, I have my favorite powders as well. This all sounds simple enough, and it is, but there is no doubt that some combinations work better than others and that we all have different tastes, different sized bodies, and different amounts and kinds of activities. This said, you will find amongst my recipes, ones that you like better than others and ones that serve you better with different activities or at different times of the day.
The idea behind a green smoothie challenge is to pack more natural, wholesome delicious nutrients into your day and to try new things! Crowd out the foods that do not lead you to your best health, fill up with fresh, alive nutrients and feel your best. Doing this for a couple of weeks straight will help you see cumulative effects of goodness, aliveness, and cheer! You may even want to keep going!
